A new Judge is called because God's people need: 1. His prophetic word to understand their plight. 2. a 'weak' saviour who relies on God's mighty presence. 3. a saviour with whom God is well pleased. 4. a saviour who will: a) deliver them from false gods. b) obey, whatever the personal cost. 5. a Saviour who is triumphant over sin-even death itself. Paul proclaims that the Gospel is about God and his reputation before it is about me and my salvation, because: 1. We can only experience God's saving righteousness in Jesus Christ. 2. Only Jesus could pay the price for our unrighteousness (sin). We should therefore behold in wonder our righteous God. The prophetess Deborah and military leader Barak are jointly called to act as Judges to God's people revealing that: 1. they needed Godly leadership. 2. only God can rise up faithful leaders for them. 3. comfort and cares prevented some of them from taking part in His rescue. 4. God will show them true might - if they trust Him. 5. God has surprising plans - to humble the proud and lift up the humble. See also: Exodus 15:20-21, Hebrews 11:32-34, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-12

Paul addresses those who are hoping to rely on their own, rather than God's, plan of salvation, by making it clear that: 1. We are all 'under sin' - Enslaved. 2. We are all found guilty by God. 3. We are none of us able to save ourselves. See also Psalm 14:1-3, Psalm 54:1-3, Psalm 14:5-7, Romans 2:29, Psalm 5:9, Psalm 140:3, Psalm 10:7, Isaiah 59:7-8, Psalm 36:1, Proverbs 1:7, Romans 7:18

In this account of the adult Moses' first encounter with his people he learns that: 1. God has a name to be upheld. 2. God hears the Israelites groaning. 3. God remembers His covenant. 4. God is faithful to fulfil His promises. Luke's account of the 6 week old Jesus being presented in the Temple encourages us to seek from God the same 'peace' of Simeon and the same 'gratitude' of Anna for His gift of the Christ child offering: 1. peace - in the light of salvation. 2. gratitude - because redemption has come. A short devotion, on Christmas Day, showing how Luke uses three references to Jesus "lying in a manager" to show us how God, making Himself "manifest", (God with us): 1. makes this real. 2. makes this personal. 3. makes this mysterious. See also: Luke 1:51-55, Luke 4:16-21, 1 Timothy 3:16

A short devotion, at the end of our 'Carols by Candlelight' service, on the 'Peace' that was: 1. prophesied by the priest Zechariah (John the Baptist's father), before Jesus was born. 2. heralded by the Angels, on the day Jesus was born. 3. experienced by the elderly Simeon in the Temple, six weeks after Jesus was born. The third judge that God provides for His people is only mentioned in two verses but from them we learn that: 1. God saves by many or by few. 2. God uses 'outsider' saviours. 3. God uses apparently 'weak' saviours to humble the 'strong'. 4. God reserves some mystery for Himself. Paul confronts those with hard and impenitent hearts who think they are automatically saved by being Abraham's descendants who: 1. Put God on trial. 2. Let themselves off the hook! Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

HBEFC LRes-7

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
