Once Jesus' followers had their eyes and minds opened to why He had come, died and risen they were commissioned to witness to 'all nations'. To be faithful disciples we too must share the Gospel with others, once we know: 1. The Purpose of witness, 2. The Priority of witness of "these things". 3. The Power of witness comes from God, the Holy Spirit. The final chapter of Luke's Gospel sets out the evidence concerning Jesus Christ rising from the dead and appearing to His disciples. On each of these occasions He reminds them to search the many prophecies (in what we know as the 'Old Testament') to fully understand why He had to die and then rise again. Luke's account of Jesus' crucifixion introduces those who: 1 rejected Jesus as King - the religious leaders, Pilate, Herod, the Jerusalem crowd, the Roman soldiers, the scoffing thief and 2. accepted Him - the repentant thief, the Roman centurion, Joseph of Arimathea, the women at the Cross. Luke's second book, the Acts of the Apostles, records how those saying 'yes' to King Jesus began to grow. Can we truly say 'thy Kingdom come'? Luke's accounts of Jesus' public entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and his second prvate one to attend His last Passover meal six days later, both show Him to be: 1. Lord, 2. Messiah King, 3. Paul instructs the church at Colossae to forgive one another as God, in Christ, has forgiven them. 1. Forgiveness begins before we meet another soul - True forgiveness is an act of God's Grace before the world was made. 2. We do not need to forgive others - in situations that just require our patience/forbearance. 3. Forgiveness is FULL, FREE and FOREVER - when we repent our sin to God and forgive/forget others faults. In chapter 3 God speaks to Moses from a burning bush to tell him: 1. that He is the God of Moses' ancestors and has seen and heard the distress of the Hebrews who are being used as slaves in Egypt. 2. that He will free them and provide them with a new land 'flowing with milk and honey'. 3. that He will always be with Moses as he is called to lead the Hebrews journeying to this new land. Isaiah, the prophet, visits the Temple in a time of crisis and is given a vision of 'the king, the LORD of hosts' which immediately makes him aware of his sinful and unworthy condition before God. Through experiencing God's actions towards him Isaiah finds his guilt 'taken away' and his sin 'atoned for'. Similarly, at this current time of increasing world crisis, we too can receive the same forgiveness through trusting in Jesus. See also: Revelation 15:3-4

Scripture tells us that God is a speaking God. His own Son is called the 'Word'...He spoke the world (and us as word-speaking creatures) into being. This account of Jephthah the judge/saviour shows him to be a flawed speaker and points us towards the One who has 'the words of eternal life'. After seemingly negative comments about God's law in Chapter 7:5-6, Paul asks whether the law is sin and immediatel;y responds 'by no means', because through Jesus' death 'we are released from the law'...'to serve in the new way of the Spirit'. Yet, like Paul, we 'don't understand (our) own actions'. We continue to struggle for we are not the finished article. 1. I was a rebel. 2. But now I am a wrestler. In this passsage Jesus, preparing his disciples for the time when He would leave them, describes Himself as 'the true vine', His Father as 'the vine dresser' and his followers as 'the branches'. He asks them (and us, if we are believers) to: 1. 'Abide in me and I in you', for only in this way can His true disciples prove themselves and bear 'much fruit'. 2. 'Abide in my love' in the same way that He abides in the Father's love. 3. 'bear fruit' that abides. 4. Love one another. See also Colossians 2:6-7

Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

HBEFC LRes-7

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
