After seemingly negative comments about God's law in Chapter 7:5-6, Paul asks whether the law is sin and immediatel;y responds 'by no means', because through Jesus' death 'we are released from the law'...'to serve in the new way of the Spirit'. Yet, like Paul, we 'don't understand (our) own actions'. We continue to struggle for we are not the finished article. 1. I was a rebel. 2. But now I am a wrestler. In this passsage Jesus, preparing his disciples for the time when He would leave them, describes Himself as 'the true vine', His Father as 'the vine dresser' and his followers as 'the branches'. He asks them (and us, if we are believers) to: 1. 'Abide in me and I in you', for only in this way can His true disciples prove themselves and bear 'much fruit'. 2. 'Abide in my love' in the same way that He abides in the Father's love. 3. 'bear fruit' that abides. 4. Love one another. See also Colossians 2:6-7

Although Paul reminds Christians that they now 'stand in grace' through Jesus' death having paid the price for their sin, this does not mean that God's grace gives us the freedom to do whatever we like...'By no means'. Instead we must consider ourselves 'dead to sin and alive to Christ' because we have been: freed from the slavery of sin to serve Him and 2. released to be bound to Christ and through his Spirit, be fruitful in His service. After a further 40 year period of "rest" for Israel during Gideon's time as a judge and 45 years of stability under 2 minor judges, they are plunged into civil conflict because of idolatry and repeated rebellion against God. Have they pushed Him and His kindness too far? What about us? 1. Take heart...God's grace is rich enough to pay the cost of the vilest sin. 2. Take care...God's grace is too precious to be treated as cheap. See also: Ephesians 2:1-9, Hebrews 10:10, 22-23, 31, Matthew 7:21-23

John provides 3 reasons for loving other believers: 1. The HEART of God...we love because love is God's essential nature. 2. The HAND of God...we love because of His love in sending His own Son as a sacrifice for our sin. 3. The VISION of God...when Christians love one another the invisible God becomes visible and His love becomes perfected. Following the death of Gideon, his son Abimelech kills all but one of his 70 brothers and is then made king by the leaders of Shechem, where the worship of God has been replaced by Baal. The distasters that follow point forward to the rule of Christ, the Messiah, who offers the truth and integrity that every human needs. In this chapter Paul explores how standing in grace hits up against our daily struggle with sin. He encourages us to get our thinking straight by: 1.Considering ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus, and 2. Presenting ourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life. See also John 17:6-19, Matthew 28:18-20

This epilogue to the account of Gideon's service as a judge describes a disappointing and unusual end...an uneasy 'rest' creating the need for the true deliverer. We also see: 1. The grace of the Lord should not be presumed upon. 2. The life of faith is not smooth, proving how much we need God's grace. 3. Only Christ is the Deliverer who cannot disappoint us. Following the first four chapters of Paul's letter to the believers in Rome, in which he states that justification and eternal life comes by receiving Jesus Christ's free gift of righterouness by faith in Him, he contines to explain that only in Christ: 1. we have life in the face of death. 2. we really do have life in the face of death! Paul, writing to the new church in Colossae, teaches them that: 1. God has set a new king on the throne, Creation's original King, the Messiah, becuase He made it all. 2. Jesus is putting all Creation back together again in a great work of reconciliation. 3. All the fullness of God, which dwells in Jesus, also dwells in the believer. Planning your Visit

Thinking of coming along?

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect at a Sunday service.

HBEFC LRes-75

Where and When

We meet at the Church Building (details here) for our Sunday Services starting at 10:30am and 6pm. There is free parking on the church site, and the streets around are permit-free. For your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will give you a service sheet or hymn book and a Bible

Please note there is no dress code - please come as you are!

Services are free to attend, and we don't pass around an offering bag or plate during the service.

We serve tea, coffee, squash and biscuits after the service most weeks, which is a great opportunity to meet people, if you'd like to. All refreshments are free.

Accessibility: There is ramp access to the church, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. There are ambulant accessible toilets in the main foyer, and wheelchair accessible toilets in the rear area of the church.

Our Services

Our services begin with a welcome from one of our church leaders. They will share some church news and notices about what's going on in the life of HBEFC. We are then led through activities which help us do three main things:

  • listen to God - we hear parts of the Bible read aloud for us, and we hear a sermon - a talk which explains what a Bible passage means and how God wants it to affect our lives;
  • respond to God - we pray (mostly one person will pray from the front, but sometimes we might say a prayer together, such as the Lord's Prayer); and we sing together, a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs. If singing in this way is new to you and you prefer to remain seated and listen, that's OK!
  • encourage each other - everything in the service is designed to help us in our faith, and that continues as we chat after the service, with refreshments most weeks.

HBEFC LRes-7

What about my kids?

We enjoy welcoming people of all ages to our services, and we stay together for the first 15 minutes or so.  After this, children from Reception - Year 8 are invited to go to Sunday Club. The service leader will make it clear when this starts. The activities vary depending on the age but usually there is a friendly welcome, Bible stories, prayer, singing and craft. Of course, if you prefer that your child stays with you for the whole service, they are very welcome to do so!

Young people (school Year 9+) stay in the service.

We also have a Creche Room available throughout the whole service, for children up to Reception age. This room has toys and books, and a speaker relay so that you can hear what is happening in the main service. We're not currently able to offer a full 'creche' facility, so parents and carers are asked to supervise their own children.
